From October 20 to 22, 2023, the Togolese capital will host the 1st edition of “Lome Peace and Security Forum (LPSF)”. Initiated by President Faure Gnasingbé, the event is part of the dynamic of initiatives at the continental level for the consolidation of stability and collective resilience. Africa must work for its own stability and Togo intends to make its contribution.
“Lome Peace and Security Forum (LPSF) focuses on the theme “How to strengthen political transitions towards democratic governance in Africa”. The Lomé meeting as part of this 1st edition comes a few months after the launch of the African Political Alliance (APA) by the government and the holding of its first ministerial conference on May 3, 2023 in Lomé.
Representatives of African and non-African governments, high-level experts, civil society organizations, academics, media, international organizations, the business world and professional organizations are expected to attend. The work on this base will last 3 days. A total of 5 panels are planned. Among other panels “Factors of fragility of state institutions in Africa”; “Political and security challenges that hinder the political transition towards democratic governance”; “Mobilizing African innovation and agility”; “Role of international and sub-regional organizations in supporting transitions”. Or “Building strong institutions and the rule of law in Africa”. At the end of the work and reflections, a series of proposals and recommendations will be formulated.
These will focus on peacebuilding, strengthening the African security system and democratic governance, building strong institutions and the rule of law and better understanding the role of multilateral organizations in monitoring political transitions. According to the Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, « Lome Peace and Security Forum » aims to develop a new way of understanding and interpreting political transitions, taking into account the contexts and dynamics of their emergence, as well as crucial issues and challenges related to strengthening democratic governance in Africa.
